The witch who raised the princess…...
(remix of Rapunzel)
We all have heard the story of Rapunzel. But is it
true or does it have a mystery behind it? Why did the witch lock Rapunzel in
the tall tower? Or why was the witch so evil that she stole Rapunzel away? Why
was Rapunzel’s hair cut off?? If you are referring to the movie or a matter of
fact even the old fairy tale story written by the legendary authors – The
brothers Grimm, then don’t. For that story is just an opposition of the
original one. To keep the children happy and more importantly to hide the truth.
What really happened?? Well, read on to find out…...
We won’t have her as our princess, your highness. I mean be
honest have you ever seen someone with hair so ridiculously short. Not me, not
anyone. She is to be executed by the end of this month if her hair doesn’t grow
at least a meter long. Yes, executed your highness. Don’t forget this
rule was imposed by your own grandfather. Your subjects won’t have her as their
princess. To prove she is worthy you will have to have her hair grown and if
not…. Then goodbye…
Smirking the man
left the palace and the king retired to his bedroom where his wife was
anxiously waiting.
‘Any news dear’? She asked her voice full of worry.
‘They have done it’.
‘Done what’??
‘She is to be
executed if her hair doesn’t grow’.
NO!! I won’t have it! No…. no…she is just a child. No!! the
queen wailed. It will have to be done dear; the king replied. The people are
growing more and more restless.
The queen could not hold it anymore and she fainted with
shock.
By this time, you will be wondering about this drama and it
is only fair that I tell you about it….
Not long ago in this prosperous kingdom a princess was
born. But the people of this kingdom refused to accept her. This was because
she was born with short hair instead of long. Yes, you would be thinking what
was the deal with short hair, but in that time only long hair were considered beautiful
and royal. Long hair was considered a mark of royalty. The town people thus
refused to accept her as their princess.
And so, the days went by and the date of execution came
nearer. The night before however, a miracle occurred saving and destroying the
life of the young princess…...
A witch passing by heard the shouts of the people to bring
out the princess. The witch alarmed hurried
to
the palace.
Then disguising herself as an old woman she went to the king to talk.
Your highness, I…...
What are you? the guards mocked. A piece of
rubbish?? The witch ignored them though clenched her jaw so hard, cracked a
tooth.
Your highness I can cure the princess. Just let me have a
look at her. The king overcome with emotion did not refuse and motioned the
guards to do the same. The guards laughed again,
‘What
the best doctors couldn’t do how can a piece of rubbish do ‘? That was too much
for the witch. She flicked her hand and the guards dropped dead. Immediately
the king knew that she was no ordinary woman. He beckoned the maid to bring the
child. Meanwhile the crowd grew restless thinking the king was hiding the
princess. The witch held the child and announced that she would be able to cure
the child but asked a price. The king desperate agreed to give anything. The
witch performed a spell she knew and before you knew it the princess had long,
golden, wavy hair, longer than anyway had ever had. And so, she was named
Rapunzel and this is her tale….
The royal family overcome with joy, started celebrating.
She no longer had to be executed. The king organised a grand feast inviting
anyone who would come. People came from far away just to look at the now
beautiful princess. Caught up in celebrations the king forgot his promise to
the witch. Outraged the witch burst in the feast and asked the king for her
reward. The king much embarrassed
remembered his promise and vowed to give
anything she would ask for. The witch asked for half of his kingdom of course
the king refused. But not only did he refuse, angry that the witch wanted as
much power as him, he ordered the guards to throw her out, forgetting that she
was the one who had saved his daughter’s life.
The celebrations continued but the king was worried. He had
seen what she was capable of. And he was right. The witch did take revenge….
At the dead of night, the witch stole Rapunzel and took her
away to a tall tower where she locked her away. In the morning when the queen
did not find the princess, she alarmed the king. The king ordered the guards to
go in every direction and search every place for the witch and the princess.
however, the tower was well hidden and concealed beneath a layer of magic.
The witch raised Rapunzel for many years in secret. When
Rapunzel was 15 years old, she begged her mother to let her out of the horrid
tower. The witch agreed for she had a kind heart and only bore a grudge against
the king. However before going she warned Rapunzel to make sure that she was
not seen.
Do not take this locket out whatsoever my dear.
I won’t mother, I promise.
And with this Rapunzel set out.
After this the original story was quite the same yet a
little different. Rapunzel does meet a man who comes to meet her by the same
way her mother does – using her hair as a rope to climb up. But the witch being
good does not stop the man from coming.
The witch blinding the man?? That never really happened. In
fact, the witch, the man and the princess quite enjoyed themselves on stormy
nights, playing together and watching the world below search for Rapunzel.
One day a wizard visits the forest where the three of them
were having a great time. The wizard was an old enemy of the witch and was
wickedly surprised to find witch in the forest. He was awestruck by the beauty
of Rapunzel. His mind created an evil plan to take her away and kill the witch
to take revenge.
He transformed himself into an old beggar and asked for
food and shelter. The witch was not be fooled and she merely said “welcome old
friend” and hit the wizard with a green force. Wizard had become very powerful
over the years and though the witch was fighting very courageously, she knew
she will be overpowered soon. Drawing a shield to protect herself she shouted
over her shoulder “Rapunzel get out of here. Save your necks. Use the secret
passage. He is too powerful. But I will hold him off for some time. Run.”
Rapunzel just couldn’t do that. She was her mother after
all. She refused to go. “This is no time for heroism Rapunzel. He will kidnap
you as soon as he is done with me. Go, just know I will always be there for
you”. Rapunzel knew she had no choice but to leave her and mounting her horse
with the prince, she galloped away. They went to the prince’s palace. Meanwhile
in the forest the wizard drawing his knife said “game over witch”. The witch
laughed and said “ya, ya all that nonsense.”
And with a final flick of her hand, she transformed herself into flames,
erupting her body, and hurtled herself at the wizard. Her sacrifice didn’t go
waste. The wizard too couldn’t survive the shock and he burned away. Rapunzel
was always happy after that in the care of the prince, but never forgot her
heroic foster mother who had saved her life twice and in return gave hers….
The End.
